Lead Without the Performance Tax

Why Do High Performing Women Feel Exhausted Even When They’re Succeeding?

You’ve done everything right. Followed the rules. Put in the hours. Made the sacrifices. Smiled through the meetings where you knew the answer and waited to be asked.

You’ve earned the title. Carry the team. Deliver the results.

And you are exhausted in a way that vacation won’t fix.

Let’s talk about what’s actually going on.

Thank You Jackie! That really was MAGIC! I feel like a new person – well at least a person with a new lease on life. I am the happiest I have ever been in my short 51 years. People are noticing my constant smile and curiosity. I definitely plan on continuing that trend. I cannot thank you enough. You have helped me achieve a level of calm I never thought possible! I’m not saying I’m some guru. I still react to certain situations – but it’s my recovery time that is most impressive. I’m able to shake things off so much quicker.

What Does It Cost to Lead in Survival Mode?

I want you to picture a meeting you were in recently.

You knew the answer. You might have even had the data to support it. But you spent ten seconds or ten minutes, or the whole drive there calculating whether this was the moment to say it. Whether the room was ready. Whether you were positioned well enough to say it without it landing wrong.

And then you said a version of it. A smaller version. Or you waited. Or someone else said it and got the credit.

You’ve done that calculation so many times it doesn’t feel like a calculation anymore. It just feels like reading the room.

It is reading the room. And it is also the thing that is draining you.

What Is the Performance Tax High Achievers Pay?

My homepage will tell you your busyness isn’t proof of your value. That’s true.

Here’s the part that goes deeper:

The behaviors that made you successful like anticipating needs, managing perception, staying composed, adjusting your delivery so the message lands – those are real skills. They work. The organization rewarded them. So you kept doing them.

What nobody told you is that over time, those same skills become a tax.

Every ounce of energy that goes into managing how you’re perceived is energy that doesn’t go into the work you’re capable of. Every time you edit yourself down to stay palatable, you get a little further from the leader you were supposed to become.

My forthcoming book, Palatable, Profitable, and Dying Inside, has a name for this pattern. High-performers succeed by shrinking just enough to keep the room comfortable. And the more they’re rewarded for it, the deeper it goes. Until the people with the most to contribute are the ones most running on empty.

This is a system doing exactly what it was designed to do. But you don’t have to keep funding it with your own energy.

Is Burnout a Personal Problem or an Organizational One?

You’re probably right. The culture is part of it.

The double standard is real. The rooms that weren’t designed for you are real. The tax you pay for existing in spaces where you have to work twice as hard to be taken half as seriously — all of it is real.

And you still can’t control it.

What you can control is how much of yourself you spend working around it. That’s the part we work on. Not accepting the system. Getting strategic about what you give it.

What Changes When You Stop Leading From Self-Protection?

When less energy goes into self-protection, something shifts.

Decisions that used to take days happen in minutes. Difficult conversations that you’ve been rehearsing in your head for weeks get scheduled (and they go better than you feared). You stop losing three days to a single piece of critical feedback. You walk into rooms as yourself, not the curated version you built to keep everyone comfortable.

One client described it: “Life tastes better.”

Another: “There is rarely a day I don’t use something Jackie gave me.”

Another got out of four months of stalling on a business decision. Instead, it was done in 48 hours after one session.

That’s reclaimed capacity.

I work in an unforgiving industry where decisions have a snowball effect on everything. She gives me honest feedback whether I like it or not, and it forces me to handle difficult situations logically. I’m eternally grateful.

What Happens During a Leadership Expansion Assessment?

Forty-five complimentary minutes devoted entirely to you.

This call is about where your energy is going. How much of it is spent managing perception, proving your value, anticipating other people’s reactions, or making yourself easier for the room to handle. And how little is left for the work you’re genuinely capable of.

You’ll leave knowing where your leadership energy is leaking, why it keeps happening, and one concrete shift to begin reclaiming it.

Most people walk out of this call and say they didn’t realize how long they’d been holding their breath.

Imagine what becomes possible when you no longer have to.

Who Is Jackie Roby?

Jackie Roby is an Executive Leadership Advisor and founder of Inspired Journey Consulting. She works with high-performing professionals and the organizations that depend on them, closing the gap between the leader someone is and the leader the business needs. The results show up in stronger decisions, cleaner communication, and a kind of confidence that doesn’t disappear when the pressure climbs.

Her work is grounded in her Fulfillment Formula™, a methodology built for leaders who want to perform at the level the business expects without the rest of their life paying the bill.

Jackie has spoken from Boston to Dubai, chairs the Global Wellness Institute’s Inclusive Wellness Initiative, and co-authored Confident You: Raw Conversations. Her forthcoming book, Palatable, Profitable, & Dying Inside, names what high performers have been living for years but had no language for.

She brings something most advisors don’t have on paper: the lived experience of navigating depression, anxiety, and C-PTSD while building a career. She’s performed through it. She’s also found the other side of it. That combination changes how she works with people.

People walk away from working with Jackie saying the same thing: it was the first time someone told them the truth and gave them something to do about it.
