Do you consider yourself a wellness traveler? It’s okay if you don’t. Maybe you’re not 100% sure about this whole wellness travel thing. You love your time at the pool with sun and cocktails. And nobody is going to take that pleasure away from you! Nor should they. But hear me out. Wellness can be part of your experience along with proper lounging, shopping, or other activities that suit your fancy.

Tip #1: Set the Intention for Wellness

While it’s fair to say that wellness means different things to different people, for the sake of planning remember it relates to mind, body, and spirit. Consider what each day of your trip looks like. Decide that you will actively choose to fulfill one of these pillars each day. That wasn’t so hard, right?

Tip #2: Focus On What You Love

One of my favorite things about wellness travel is the joy it brings. This is your time off so it should be spent doing what makes you happy. If yoga sounds miserable, then don’t do it. Maybe a bike ride is something you crave? That tends to be easily accessible during vacation. For example, Banyan Tree Mayakoba provides complimentary bikes with each guest room. For water sport lovers, Lake Austin Spa Resort includes the use of lake equipment in their rate. That’s kayaking, stand-up paddleboards, hydro-bikes, and more.

Does the restaurant at your hotel serve food sourced locally or grown on property? That fresh quality will help nourish your body. If you’re a juice fan, opt for a fresh pressed option with breakfast or lunch. White Barn Inn offers gluten-free options that are a nice alternative. Talk to your server about tasty, nutritious options (not just a fruit plate please – unless that sounds good to you). Personally, I like to see what creative, healthy food options there are to satisfy my boujee palate.

Consider finding one thing to be grateful for every single day. Just one thing and it will do wonders for your spirit. How can you stimulate and open your mind? Personally, meditation is my constant. But perhaps there is a book you can enjoy poolside. Or a local art exhibit nearby? Talk to your travel advisor as you’re planning to get ideas on activities available.

Tip #3: Try Something New

For years now, I’ve been a fan of the new. If you’re like me, this can be a fun, daily activity. I understand this isn’t comfortable for everyone. For those who struggle with new, I promise to take it easy in this space. Remember Tip #2 is Focus On What You Love. Now take a deep breath. We’re still going to find something you love AND something new. If you like massages, try a different style. Maybe you like to take walks, so try different routes each day or a guided hike like the daily ones at The Retreat Costa Rica. If you like burgers and fries, consider trying vegetable-forward side dishes or appetizers to complement your meal. And what I tell our daughter is eat the vegetables first! This is food tasting 101. Imagine eating a spoonful of ice cream and then taking a bite of a super sweet strawberry. The fruit would likely taste bland or bitter. You wouldn’t be able to enjoy the full flavor. Eating is meant to be enjoyed!

Whether venturing out for a staycation, road trip, or exploring even further, these simple tips can introduce the beauty of wellness into your travels. Stay inspired!
